The sex tape market is worth $10 billion a year in India, according to a new study.
The report by India’s National Consumer Action Mission for Electronic Entertainment and Digital Media, said the industry in the country is worth Rs 2.4 trillion (€1.7 trillion).
The country has a population of 6.5 billion, but only around 30 per cent of the market is female, the report said.
“We are the only country in the world that has no legal framework to protect the women’s right to privacy and sexual freedom,” the report’s authors said.
The report says that women make up 70 per cent to 80 per cent asexually active, making them vulnerable to exploitation.
The industry has been under scrutiny in recent years for its portrayal of sexual violence.
Last year, a study by Amnesty International claimed that India was home to the world’s most pervasive sexual violence against women, with at least two-thirds of all rapes reported in the nation.
The government has repeatedly criticised the media, but there has been no official comment from the media on the report.
